Server Locator Services The Server Locator Services for DvISE (SLS ) enable continuous online access in additionto direct access to your DvISE server, even if it is not connected to the Internetvia a dedicated line and therefore does not have a static IP address. Since computersin the Internet are identified only by their IP address, direct access to theinformation of a computer with a changing IP address is practically impossible.A change in the IP address is automatically detected by the SLS and reported tothe DNS server at Tobit Software. This central DNS server, operated by Tobit Software, manages the DNS entries of all users of the Server Locator Services. If thereis a request via a Web or WAP browser, this browser will be notified by the DNSserver of the current IP address of your DvISE server. In this way, the DvISE server isalways accessible via the Internet and functions essentially as if there were a dedicatedline for the Internet connection. Requirements The Server Locator Services are available with David Professional and David. If youwish to use the remote access capabilities for your own messages using David, youmust also install the Internet Access Module, which contains the Web and WAPserver. In addition, there must be an "always online connection" to the Internet,e.g. via a flat rate (such as DSL Flat). In order to use SLS, the DvISE PostMan mustalso be configured on the DvISE server. For this reason, the DvISE PostMan is automaticallystarted during the SLS Installation, even if this service has not been usedbefore. Installation The installation of the Server Locator Services generally takes place during the basicDvISE installation. Activate the option Install Server Locator Services for DvISE.In the dialog window that follows you will be prompted to enter your password.Enter the third block of your system license here. This character string is also yourpassword for the customer forum Club tobit.com at www.tobit.com. If you have already registered for the Club tobit.com and have already changedyour password, then enter the valid password here. This password is used for authenticationof the periodic transmission of the IP address to the DNS server of TobitSoftware. Your access data is generated automatically and saved in the Tobit Archive System on your DvISE server in the Archive »System - DvISE - Domains - Auth Domain Names«. Your current domain name consists of your Site ID (the first 10 digits of yoursystem license including the hyphen) and the domain ".tobit.net", for example: 12345-67890.tobit.net This domain name is entered in the PostMan configuration under »Databases ->Valid Domain Name«. In the Club tobit.com at www.tobit.com you can also configureyour own sub-domain of tobit.net, in addition to this automatic domain name,e.g. "johndoe.tobit.net", if the name has not already been issued. Please note thatthis domain name must also be entered in the DvISE system configuration (e.g. forWebBox and PostMan). Operation The Server Locator Services for DvISE operate essentially in the background. TheDvISE PostMan verifies the IP address of the DvISE server. As soon as it detects achange in the IP address, it automatically sends the new address to the DNS serverof Tobit Software. This ensures the constant availability of your DvISE server via theInternet. This applies both to requests from Web or WAP browsers and the exchangeof eMails. Therefore, your own DvISE server can be operated as an independentmail server, making it unnecessary to send and receive eMails via an externalprovider. For the secure matching of the IP address with the DNS server, PostMan uses theSMTP authentication (AUTH=CRAM-MD5) for the connection. The access data forthis is defined by your system license and is entered on your DvISE server in thePostMan configuration under AUTH Domain Name. Your Site ID is used here asthe default domain name. This corresponds to the first 10 digits of your system license.Under password, your password for the Club tobit.com is entered, whichnormally consists of the third block of characters in your system license. Please note that whenever you change the password for access to the Club tobit.comat www.tobit.com, you must also enter this new password in the SLS entry of the Post-Man configuration under »AUTH Domain Names«. The »Advanced -> Server Locator Services« option in the PostMan system configurationis used to activate or deactivate the Server Locator Services. Special cases In the following cases, the DvISE PostMan cannot accurately read the IP address ofthe server: Internet connection via a DSL router If the Internet connection of your system takes place via a DSL router, you can forcea periodic connection of the DvISE PostMan to the DNS server at regular intervalsby entering the parameter »SLSInterval« in the DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE\POSTMAN.INI file . The IP address used by PostMan to log on to the DNS server iscompared and adapted, if necessary. The value of the parameter is the desired intervalin seconds. If you wish, for example, that the periodic connection takes placeevery 360 seconds, add the following line to the file POSTMAN.INI: SLSInterval = 60 Internet access software not on the DvISE server If the Internet connection is not performed by the computer on which the DvISEinstallation is located, a special procedure is required. This can occur, for example,if your David installation is on a NetWare server and Internet access software isonly available for use on a Windows computer. In this case, the additional utilityprogram IPCHECK.EXE is necessary for determining the IP address. This program is located in the directory DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE\ of the DvISEserver. It verifies the current IP address that was used for the Internet connectionand transmits the address to the DvISE PostMan as soon as a change is detected. The latter then compares the address with the DNS server of Tobit Software. To set up the program, proceed as follows: Execute the file IPCHECK.EXE on the Windows computer to be used for the Internetconnection. The configuration dialog will open and the program will appear asan icon in the Windows system menu bar. On the »State« tab you can observe the operation of the program. Select the »Options« tab and enter the name of your DvISE server using UNC conventionin the input field DvISE Server. If the server is a NetWare server, then youmust also indicate the Volume on which your DvISE installation is located. Examples: Windows NT/2000 server: \\Servername NetWare server: \\Servername\Volume With the function »Update in interval« you can force the connection to the DNSserver at specified intervals. In this case, the connection is also completed if nochange in the IP address was detected. Enter the length of the desired interval inseconds. Normally, however, no entry is required here. Click »Save« to save the current settings. Select the »Hide« option, if you wish for the program to operate in the background, with the dialog window hidden. In this case, the dialog window can beactivated at any time by clicking on the icon in the system menu bar. |
