| The configuration of the SMTP service on Windows NT/2000/XP is carried out in the David.Administrator (menu »Configuration -> PostMan«) and under Novell NetWare in the configuration dialog of the POSTMAN.NLM. With a dedicated line to the Internet sending as well as receiving eMails occurs via the SMTP protocol. With a switched line sending occurs via the SMTP protocol. To collect received eMails from the Provider the POP3 as well as the SMTP protocol (via ATRN or ETRN) can be used. Take up the following settings resp. check the entered values. General settings Under the menu item »System -> General« you can take up general settings for sending eMails. - SMTP Host
Name If you already dispose of an own domain then enter the Host name of your server into the field (e.g. example.com). The Host name conforms the »DNS A record« for your domain name. This must be entered with a dedicated line as well as with a switched line. If you use a switched line then further settings will be necessary under the item »Provider«.If you dispose of additional domain names for which the PostMan shall also receive eMails then enter these under the item »Databases -> Valid Domain Names« in the David PostMan configuration. If you do not dispose of an own domain then with the use of a dedicated line you can also enter the local IP address of the David Server. - Domain Name Server
Here enter the IP address of the Domain Name Servers to be used. With an installation on Windows NT/2000/XP the corresponding values are automatically taken over from the Windows system configuration.David PostMan uses the primary IP address of the David Server and the TCP-Port 25. You can change these settings in the file »\DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE\POSTMAN.INI«. Provider settings If you want to send all outgoing eMails via a SMTP Relay Server (Smarthost) via dedicated line or switched line then activate the corresponding option under the menu item »System -> Provider« and enter the domain name or the IP address of this server into the field »Provider Mail Server«. The field is correspondingly preallocated if you have already specified this during the David installation. If the Mail Server requests a SMTP login then activate the corresponding function »Login required« and define the necessary data for the authentication via the option »Parameters«. If you dispose of POP3 accounts on this server which are regularly requested via the David Grabbing Server then you can apply the login parameters configured there by choosing the method »Use Grabbing Server accesses«. Then the username and password must not be entered in this window. Under the item »Connection« define how eMail jobs shall be processed. Activate the option »Send eMails immediately« if you desire that the transmission of each individual eMail shall directly start after being enabled. This setting is specifically suited for the use of a dedicated line. If your server is connected to the Internet via a dial-up connection then this setting effects that a liable for costs connection is built up. To prevent this you can alternatively define an »Active Time« as well as an »Interval« where a connection to the Provider is regularly processed to transmit all eMail jobs combined to the Mail Host. In addition to that you can also define via the menu item »Connect to« if the connection is allow, for example, at the weekend. With the item »Connect after program start« on Windows NT/XP/2000 you can arrange a one-time connection directly after the start of the service. Forwarding settings For safety reasons eMails which shall be sent to other domains via the David PostMan are declined in the default configuration. If you want to enable the forwarding instead then take up the necessary settings under this item. - Forward
Activate this check box to generally allow forwarding. So-called Forward Jobs are then accepted from the David PostMan and forwarded to the indicated domain. This way eMails with other eMail Clients (e.g. Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Messenger) can be sent. - Without restrictions
This setting is only available if the option »Forward« has been selected. Activate this function if the PostMan shall generally forward all forwardings without further checking. If you want to prevent that the David PostMan is misused as Forwarder then disable this function and mark the check box "Restrictions" to take up safety settings. - Restrictions
This check box is only available if the option »Without restrictions« is disabled. Choose this item if you want to take up settings for the use of the David PostMan as Forwarder. Thereupon another dialog opens in which you can define via various settings in which cases the PostMan shall process opr decline forwardings. Here the following options are available: - MX Checking at forwarding
If this setting is activated then at a forward job a request at the DNS server checks if the own Mail Server is entered as a valid forwarder for the destination domain. If an according MX entry exists then the forward job will be accepted. Otherwise the David PostMan declines such a job.If the DNS Server is not found in the own LAN then additional costs possibly occur because for each DNS check a liable for costs connection to the Provider is possibly built up. Disable this function if you desire that all forward jobs shall be accepted without the process of a MX check. - POP3/IMAP login required
This option effects that forwarding is only possible if the sender of a forward job has firstly done a POP3 or IMAP4 request and thus an authentication has taken place. Without such an authentication now forwarding will be taken up.To be able to use this kind of authentication the use and the correct configuration of the Mail Access Server is necessary. In the default configuration forward jobs are exclusively taken up within 10 minutes after the last authentication. After that a new authentication is necessary. The duration of this time can be defined in the file MASERVER.INI in the directory »\DAVID\APPS\MASERVER\CODE« via the parameter »AuthTimeWindow« - SMTP login required
Choose this function if you desire that forwardings only take place if the sender has priorily taken up a SMTP authentication. Click on the button »Parameter« to define the desired authentication method as well as the username and password. - Databases
Decide if and which PostMan databases shall be used to restrict the use of the David PostMan as forwarder. If, for example, you wish that the entries in the database »Allowed sender addresses« shall also be considered at forwardings then activate the option »Use allowed sender addresses«.Under the item »Databases« in the PostMan configuration menu you have access to these databases and you can change existing entries or add new entries if required. - Recurrences
Define if and in which intervals further sending tries shall occur if forwardings fail. Enter the desired intervals in minutes. - Confirmation at delay
Define a time after which the sender of eMails shall be informed about a delayed process of their jobs. If sending resp. forwarding an eMail within the defined time is not possible then the sender will automatically be informed via eMail. The text for the automatic notification is stored in the file DELAYED.TXT and can be modified if required. The file is found in the directory »DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE« on the David Server. - Expiry
Define after which time no more retries shall be taken up. If sending resp. forwarding a message is not possible within the defined time then the job will be rejected and the sender will automatically informed about this via eMail. The text for the automatic information is stored in the file POSTMAN.TXT and can be modified if required. The file is found in the directory »DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE« on the David Server. DFÜ settings (only on Windows NT/2000/XP) If you are connected to the Internet via switched line then you can use a Windows DFÜ connection for the regular dial up. This requires that the selected DFÜ connection was installed correctly on Windows. On the »System -> DFÜ -> Network« tab activate the function »Automatically activate DFÜ connection« and choose the desired connection.Afterwards enter the corresponding data for the chosen DFÜ connection into the fields »Username« and »Password«. The time intervals for the build up of the connection are set up in the Provider settings. If there is a DFÜ setting then the David PostMan tries to establish a connection to the Internet via this setting. Advanced settings Via the menu item »System -> Advanced« you can configure additional options for the use of the David PostMan. - Monitor Information
During the operation the David PostMan logs the communication with the other Mail Hosts. At this all commands that were sent and the subsequent answers will be logged. The always last 100 lines of this log can be viewed under the menu item »Monitor -> Ports -> DvISE PostMan« in the David.Administrator (on Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP) resp. under the main menu item »Monitor« of the PostMan NLM (on Novell NetWare). via the check box »Monitor Information« it can be defined how detailed this communication protocol shall be conducted. The possible settings suffice from »Off« (no logging) up to »Complete« (Logging of all notifications). This information can be written to the file »\DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE\POSTMAN.DEB«. For this enter the parameter FILE=TRUE into the file »\DAVID\APPS\POSTMAN\CODE\POSTMAN.INI«. - Save original message
If this function is activated a copy of the original message including the Mail Header and all file attachments is saved. This copy is created directly after reception and contains the message in the form as it was received without any conversions taking place. It is stored in the comment file of the according Archive entry. At possible sending or reception problems the content of this file can give important hints for the troubleshooting. To view this information in the comment file right-click on the corresponding document in the entry list in the David.InfoCenter and choose »Advanced Information« from the context menu. If you want to use this function consider that this causes more disk space on the hard disk. With eMails containing file attachments you even need more than double disk space because the attachments are additionally saved in 7-Bit format in which the transmission takes place. - Attach routing list
With the activation of this function the »To« and »Cc« information of a received eMail will be attached at the end of the mail text. This list contains all eMail addresses to which an original or a copy of the corresponding message was sent. - Server Locator Services
If you use the Server Locator Services of David to establish a connection to the Internet you must activate this option. - Allow TLS reception
Activate this function if you want to enable the reception of eMails via secure TLS connections. In this case you must dispose of a corresponding certificate which allows the communication via TLS connections. This certificate is used for the identification and also contains code keys which are used for the message transmission. - Use TLS at sending
Define if and how eMails shall be sent via secure TLS connections. Choose the option »Never« if TLS shall generally not be used when sending eMails. With the setting »If possible« it is first checked if establishing a secure TLS connection to the recipient is possible. If this succeeds then sending encrypted occurs via this line. If at the checking it is determined that no TLS connection is possible to the according remote station then sending automatically occurs unencrypted. If the option »Enforce« is chosen eMails will exclusively be sent if a TLS connection to the remote station can be established. This can also be adjusted for individual messages directly in the David.InfoCenter via the corresponding button in the »Message Options«. In this case sending occurs encrypted. An unencrypted eMail sending is not possible with this setting.Jobs which cannot be transmitted as TLS message cannot be performed and will appear with a corresponding error report in the Out archive of the sender. - Connection
As »Timeout« define a time in seconds in which the David PostMan waits on a reply of the DNS Server. If this value is too low the connection establishment can prior abort.Note: Further information about the subject »External eMail with own Internet connection is found here KnowledgeBase article 103.156.
