Option 1: Server Migration Services for DvISE
Tobit features an effective tool, the "Server Migration Services for DvISE" which can migrate DvISE data via mouse click in a server change. Thereby also important system data is assumed besides all files that are stored in the Tobit Archive System. The server Migration Services for DvISE can be applied for migrations from Netware to Win32, from Netware to Linux, from Win32 to Linux as well as from Win32 to Win32.

The Server Migration Services for DvISE can be purchased by the resellers via the Tobit Partner Network. Requirement for the application is DvISE ex version 6.6. Moreover it has to be noticed, that purchase of a new DvISE full product is necessary for the new setup of the server.

Option 2: Manual Data Migration
Please notice, that a data migration is not provided actually and the following text concerns a Workaround!

First of all you have to effect an according data backup!

If you are working under Windows NT/2000 (NT -> NT) and the server name remains »identic« in principal you can quite simply recopy a copy of the David directory over the reinstallation - after the full installation - whereas all ports need to be installed in the same order.

In principal it is quite similar under Novell NetWare but it must be ensured that volume and servername remain the same.

Besides there is merely the possibility to assume data of the Archive but no configuration data. This data migration cannot be proceeded by simple copying but MUST be effected with the help of an archive packer or with ArcUtil. Surely the data migration by using ArcUtil (per search and replace) is the faster solution, but you should stay away from this procedure because it may come to irreparable prejudice in the archive structure by inappropriate usage of the tool ArcUtil.

For that reason adhere to the below performed procedure which describes the data migration via "MKINST". You will also find this tool on your David Server within the directory »DAVID\UTIL\WINDOWS\MKARC«.

This guidance has been written for a data migration considering Novell NetWare -> Windows NT as example. If you are planning on a data migration Windows NT -> Windows NT or Novell NetWare -> Novell NetWare potential path indications have to be replaced naturally.

To effect these necessary steps you have to act as follows:

  1. First of all please make sure that directory entries which are not needed for the new installation will be removed from the archives. Therefore please arrange all archives e.g. 30 days(or wished period)in the archive adjustment on the workstation of the administrator in the David Client.

Now you change into the Servicelayer under Netware and press ALT-1. Now you can persue by ALT-3 how the adjustment is effected.

Please open the DAVID.INI file in the DAVID/CODE directory under Windows NT. There please adjust entry ";deletetime=1" into the following entry:

deletetime= x (x stands for the next clock hour!)

Now restart the Servicelayer under Windows NT. Now await till the next clock hour arrives.

David now effects an adjustment. You can notice the end of adjustment in the archive : SYSTEM/DAVID/PROBLEM REPORT. There will be an entry: "Finish purging Archive". You cannot continue with step 2 until this entry appears!

  2. Now start the MKINST.EXE out of directory LW:\DAVID\UTIL\WINDOWS\MKARC from the old server:
    • For integrity and security reasons an archive packed with MKINST32.EXE should not cover more than 250 MB. If you dispose a major data volume, separate the contents of your archives accordingly e.g. the address archive into an own packed file.
    • You have now the possibility to indicate the term of the old archive within the window OPTIONS. Naturally that would be : ARCHIVE
    • Please quote explicitly the archive name (e.g.: FAXBOX) if you just want to pack particular archives.
    • In the next field (quoted source directory) you have the possibility to indicate accurately, where to find the desired archive. Now you can choose the path (e.g.:"\\»SERVERNAME«\SYS:\DAVID\ARCHIVE")using the left located button (...).
    • Please change down into the archive which you want to assume. (possiblity: "\\»SERVERNAME«\SYS:DAVID\ARCHIVE\FAXBOX\")
    • Now please indicate a path and file name into the last field of the tool (quoted destination file) where the packed archive of MKINST shall be stored.A path beyond the DAVID directory structure would be offerable. (e.g.: "C:\DATEN\OLDARCH.exe")
    • Please click the PACK button after you clicked on the field "keep sender".
Now the data gets packed. This process takes some time. The workstation is relatively high charged while running this process so please do not work with another program during packing process.

  3. Please effect a backup of the David directory after the archives are stored beyond the David structure. This would be the only possibility to get back the data, if there occurs an error during the packing process!

  4. Now a deinstallation of David can be effected on the old server.

  5. Therefore you start the uninstall routine under Windows NT, under Novell Netware you just have to delete the David directory. (Please also rename the files DVNDS.NLM and DAVID.*, as well as TLDxxx.nlm)Now delete the file "TOBIT.INI" on the Workstations.
  6. Now you can proceed a reinstallation on the new server. Please do not yet effect a client setup!

  7. Now start the archive file ending with".exe" you created in step 2. You just have to indicate the destination path here. For that purpose you can migrate into the "\\»SERVERNAME«\DAVID\ARCHIVE\" directory using the (...) button. But please do not use mapped drives. Afterwards you type in OLD behind the last "\".

What is still necessary now, is the nomination of the server name.e.g.: "\\»SERVERNAME«" Under Novell this would be : "\\»SERVERNAME«\VOL1:"Now press the "INSTALL" button. Now the archives get reimported.

  8. Now install the clients on the workstations. For that, log yourself in as ADMINISTRATOR or coequal user at all workstations.

Here you can see an archive folder "ARCHIVE" or "FAXBOX" whichever is the archive denomination you used in step 2, below the blue archive box.

  9. Now you only need to displace the desired archive contents via DRAG&DROP into the desired archive.Only thing that is important, the displace must take place within the client.
Now all old data has been assumed to your new server.
